All of this just adds up to the long list of benefits having a window gives you. But can the same thing be so exquisite and very dangerous at the same time? Apparently, windows are.
How can windows be dangerous? Let me tell you: About every 1 in 5 burglars get into houses through windows. This shows how windows are extremely important to focus on for the security of your house. If your windows are secure, then almost half of your house’s security is accounted for. Therefore, we shall tell you how exactly you can accomplish this task by letting you know about a few tips and techniques you can use to secure any type of windows you have.
These are two types of windows usually found in homes and their following methods of protection:
- Sash Frame Windows
These are the simple kind; the one that have a hook as a lock in the older versions and are sometimes varied to form double hung windows as well. Both of these are subject to some simple security fixes which can save you from a lot of trouble.
Both the window types can be secured in place by simple pin locks which are drilled through the bottom of the top sash and all the way through to the upper half of the bottom one to tightly secure them in place. This alignment prevents the windows from being opened from the outside. Also, a deadbolt of strong metal can be attached at both ends of the sash as an alternative way to properly lock the window.
- Sliding Glass Windows/Doors
In modern housing, most large houses have sliding glass windows fitted in huge areas such as living rooms and master bedrooms. These windows have a different system of use and are hence, secured differently. Firstly, a pin can be used on the track itself so that it prevents movement from the outside when it is dropped. Something called a “charley bar” can also be used as they can be rotated downwards as a blockage to the door opening.
The track itself also needs to be secured as many burglars simply lift the door off its track and enter. However, this can be avoided through safety devices like longer pins which fall through directly from the window to the sliding track itself.
Apart from that, there are also other general methods to use which upgrade the window’s security. These include using decals that show the illusion of extra security to the burglar. The panes are obviously an issue since the glass can just be broken into. For this, we recommend stronger panes like tempered glass or vinyl. Moreover, a grill of iron can be custom built to be added as a front cover to the window. These grills are much harder to break into and will usually be also using the sliding track function to work.
Using these methods, you can make your chances of increasing window security to the utmost. Use them wisely.
